Women’s Empowerment in Costa Rica

For generations, women in Costa Rica’s coffee industry have been the backbone of production—handling much of the labor but rarely having financial control or decision-making power. However, organizations like Bean Voyage, a feminist non-profit, and ASOMOBI, a women-led coffee cooperative, are changing that narrative.

By providing financial education, access to fair-trade markets, and opportunities for political engagement, these initiatives are closing the gender pay gap and fostering economic independence for women. As a result, female coffee producers are not only improving their own livelihoods but also reinvesting in their communities—funding essential projects such as schools, healthcare clinics, and infrastructure improvements.

This movement underscores the importance of financial literacy and equitable opportunities in building sustainable communities. When women gain financial control, entire economies benefit.
